MPPSC Prelims — Structure, Nature & What It Measures

One day, two objective papers (OMR). Each paper is 200 marks / 2 hours. Both papers are compulsory. Question papers are bilingual (Hindi and English). Negative marking = ⅓ per wrong answer.

Paper 1: General Studies I — Merit Screen (200 marks)

Nature: Objective, OMR-based. 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours.

Objective — what MPPSC is checking:

• Breadth of concepts across History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science & Technology, Environment, Current Affairs.
• Strong Madhya Pradesh-specific focus (geography, history, polity, culture, economy).
• Ability to apply static knowledge to current events.
• Accuracy matters: negative marking punishes guesswork, rewards precision.

Scoring logic:

• Your GS Paper-I score decides shortlisting to Mains.
• This is the merit screen for the exam cycle.

Paper 2: General Aptitude Test (CSAT) — Qualifying (200 marks)

Nature: Objective aptitude paper. 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours

Areas tested:

• Reading comprehension
• Logical reasoning & analytical ability
• Decision-making & problem-solving
• Basic numeracy (up to Class X level)
• Data interpretation

Objective: To check minimum aptitude for administration. This paper is qualifying only (33% minimum required).

Brutal truth: Many aspirants fail to clear CSAT despite good GS scores. Treat it as a risk to be neutralised, not as an afterthought.

Marking, Language & Logistics (the non-negotiables)

• Negative marking: –⅓ per wrong answer; multiple answers = wrong; blanks = no penalty.
• Medium: Hindi & English (Hindi comprehension passages tested in Hindi only).
• OMR, black ball-point pen only.
• Scribe facility + compensatory time (20 minutes per hour).
• Exam Cycle: Prelims usually held 3–4 months after notification in a single day, two shifts.

Who Qualifies for Mains?

• About 15× the number of vacancies are shortlisted (ratio varies year to year).
• CSAT must be qualified (33%) for GS Paper-I to be considered.
• Merit ranking is strictly by GS Paper-I score.

Answer Keys & Cut-offs

• MPPSC releases official answer keys after Prelims (first provisional, then final).
• Cut-off lists are issued post exam; they clearly state GS Paper-I basis and CSAT qualifying rule.

Exam-Day Checklist (ruthlessly simple)

• E-Admit Card + valid ID, report early; follow frisking rules.
• Two black ball-point pens, transparent stationery only.
• No mobiles, smartwatches, or electronic gadgets.
• Bubble carefully; encode booklet series & roll number exactly.

MPPSC Mains — Structure, Subjects & What They Measure

Candidates who qualify the MPPSC Prelims appear for the Mains Examination. It consists of 6 descriptive papers, covering General Studies, Hindi, and Essay. Marks in all papers are added to the merit list — there are no “qualifying-only” papers.

Merit Papers (All counted in merit)

• Paper I: General Studies I (300 marks, 3 hours
• Focus: History, Culture, Geography (India + Madhya Pradesh).
• Paper II: General Studies II (300 marks, 3 hours)
• Focus: Polity, Constitution, Governance, Social Justice, International Relations, with emphasis on MP administration.
• Paper III: General Studies III (300 marks, 3 hours)
• Focus: Economy, Science & Technology, Environment, Energy Security, Disaster Management, Agriculture (MP-specific coverage).
• Paper IV: General Studies IV (200 marks, 3 hours)
• Focus: Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude, Case Studies.
• Paper V: General Hindi (200 marks, 2 hours)
• Focus: Hindi comprehension, grammar, writing skills, précis.
• Paper VI: Hindi Essay (100 marks, 2.5 hours)
• Focus: Analytical and critical essay writing on topics of society, politics, governance, and development.

Objective: What MPPSC is Actually Checking

• Depth in Madhya Pradesh-specific knowledge (history, geography, governance, economy).
• Broad analytical ability across India and global issues.
• Clarity of thought in descriptive writing.
• Ethical reasoning and decision-making (via GS-IV).
• Proficiency in Hindi language and structured essay writing.

Who Qualifies for the Interview?

• Candidates are shortlisted roughly at 2× the number of vacancies for the Personality Test.
• The final merit list = Mains + Interview marks combined.

Exam-Day Checklist (Mains)

• Admit Card + valid photo ID.
• Only black ball-point pens allowed.
• Adhere strictly to answer-booklet instructions (word limits, margins, numbering).
• Carry only permitted stationery.
• Arrive early at the exam centre; frisking/security checks are mandatory.

The MPPSC Personality Test carries 185 marks (recently revised from 175). Its score is added to the Mains marks to prepare the final merit list. Candidates are interviewed by a Board constituted by the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission to judge suitability for state administrative services.

What MPPSC Actually Evaluates

• Knowledge of Madhya Pradesh-specific issues — governance, economy, culture, geography, society, and local challenges.
• General awareness of India and global current affairs.
• Clarity & confidence in communication.
• Analytical and problem-solving ability under pressure.
• Ethical orientation and administrative aptitude.

Medium of Interview

• Candidates may choose Hindi or English as their medium of expression.
• Answers must be clear, logical, and structured in whichever medium is chosen.

Scheduling & Process

• Conducted only for candidates who clear the Mains Exam.
• Generally scheduled about one month after Mains results.
• The interview is held at the MPPSC headquarters in Indore.

Documents & Verification

Candidates must bring originals + self-attested copies for verification.

• Date of birth certificate.
• Educational qualifications.
• Caste / reservation certificates (if applicable).
• Domicile certificate of Madhya Pradesh (if applicable).
• Any service/experience-related proofs if claimed

Failure to produce valid documents may lead to disqualification.

Travel allowance (TA)

• MPPSC generally does not provide TA reimbursement for interview candidates.
• Candidates must make their own travel and stay arrangements.

Format & flow (what to expect)

• A panel of 4–5 members interviews each candidate.
• Question areas typically include:
• Madhya Pradesh economy, polity, geography, history, and current issues.
• NNational issues and their state-level implications.
• Candidate’s academic background, optional subject, and work experience.
• The board evaluates balance, reasoning, and ethical judgment rather than rote knowledge.

Scoring reality

• With 185 marks, the interview has a major impact on final ranks.
• A difference of 15–20 marks can decide allocation of higher administrative services.

Day-of checklist

• MPPSC Interview Admit Card + valid photo ID.
• All original documents + self-attested copies.
• Report well in advance; follow frisking/security procedures.
• Dress formally and maintain confidence.
• Revise MP-specific facts, reports, and current affairs thoroughly.

Eligibility, Age, Attempts

• Only candidates who clear Mains are eligible for the Personality Test.
