Poorna is a long-term UPSC Essay preparation programme by The Study IAS, designed for aspirants who want to improve the way they think, structure and express ideas in the Civil Services Mains Essay paper.
Under the guidance of Manikant Singh, the programme goes beyond repeated essay testing. It develops the underlying skills that good essay writing depends on: understanding the topic correctly, generating relevant dimensions, building a coherent argument, using examples intelligently, maintaining flow and developing an authentic writing voice.
Many aspirants write multiple essays but continue to repeat the same weaknesses — broad introductions, disconnected paragraphs, excessive General Studies content, weak transitions or conclusions that merely restate the topic.
Poorna is built to identify and correct these structural problems through a combination of skill-building sessions, guided practice, full-length tests and personalised feedback. The aim is to improve the process of essay writing, not simply increase the number of essays attempted.
The programme includes approximately 20 skill-building sessions, generally conducted at a pace of two sessions per month across the programme cycle.
These sessions focus on the craft behind a strong UPSC Essay: decoding the theme, building a framework, generating dimensions, sequencing arguments, creating transitions, balancing abstract and concrete content, and writing within examination time.
A core element of Poorna is the APPETITE framework: Analyse – Process – Predict – Examine – Tackle – Investigate – Test – Evaluate.
The framework trains aspirants to slow down before writing and systematically explore a topic from multiple directions. Rather than depending on memorised templates, students learn how to generate a relevant structure for unfamiliar philosophical, social, political, economic, ethical and contemporary themes.
Poorna provides a broad practice universe of approximately 200 essay themes, including around 80 previous-year UPSC essay topics. The purpose is not to memorise essays. It is to expose students to recurring themes and build the ability to respond to varied topics with greater confidence and flexibility.
The programme includes 15 full essay tests designed to help students practise complete essays under examination-like conditions. These tests provide an opportunity to apply classroom learning, test time management and identify recurring structural or analytical weaknesses.
Essay improvement requires more than a score. Students need to know why an essay is not working and what specifically should change in the next attempt.
Poorna therefore uses personalised feedback to examine areas such as topic interpretation, structure, balance, depth, examples, paragraph flow, language and presentation. The objective is continuous rectification rather than test-by-test scoring without follow-up.
The programme encourages students to use their own background, observations, reading, hobbies and academic strengths where relevant. The aim is not to make every student write identical essays, but to help each aspirant develop a disciplined and authentic style within UPSC requirements.
Better essay writing can also strengthen Mains answer writing. The ability to identify dimensions, structure arguments, use transitions and maintain coherence is valuable across General Studies papers.
Poorna therefore develops essay thinking in a way that can also improve clarity and multidimensionality in descriptive answers.
Poorna is designed around a simple distinction: writing more essays does not automatically make someone a better essayist. Improvement comes when practice is supported by a thinking framework, skill development, evaluation and deliberate correction.
Nature of the Essay paper, evaluation expectations, common misconceptions and the difference between a long GS answer and a coherent essay.
Learning to decode philosophical, abstract and issue-based topics, identify the central proposition and avoid drifting away from the theme.
Applying Analyse, Process, Predict, Examine, Tackle, Investigate, Test and Evaluate to generate a disciplined multidimensional approach before writing.
Building introductions, logical paragraph sequences, transitions, counter-perspectives and conclusions that create coherence from beginning to end.
Developing social, historical, political, economic, ethical, philosophical, scientific, environmental and international dimensions without forcing irrelevant content.
Using examples, thinkers, contemporary developments, personal observations and GS knowledge selectively to strengthen arguments.
Practice across previous-year UPSC essay themes to understand recurring demands and strengthen topic adaptability.
Structured practice across a large pool of philosophical, governance, society, economy, technology, ethics and contemporary themes.
Fifteen complete essay tests for time management, application, writing stamina and examination-oriented practice.
Individual evaluation focused on interpretation, structure, originality, balance, expression and specific corrections for the next attempt.
Poorna follows a skill → practice → feedback → correction → re-practice model. The programme does not assume that essay writing improves merely by attempting more topics.
Manikant Singh’s skilling sessions first break the essay process into learnable components. Students then apply those skills through PYQs, theme-based exercises and full-length tests.
Evaluation is used diagnostically: not simply to award marks, but to identify recurring weaknesses in interpretation, structure, multidimensionality, flow, examples and expression. Subsequent practice is then used to correct those weaknesses.
The APPETITE framework provides a repeatable way to think before writing while still allowing students to develop their own voice and style.
