Species in News: Red-Eared Slider
Context: An Indian national was arrested at KLIA’s Terminal 1 after authorities discovered 2,500 red-eared slider turtles hidden in his suitcase. The estimated value of the turtles was RM348,000 (Malaysian Ringgit).

- Physical Characteristics: Oval, flattened shell (carapace) with green and yellow markings. Distinctive red stripe behind each eye.
- Geographic distribution: Originated in the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico areas. It has become globally invasive, now present in over 75 countries, including India.
- Habitat: Prefers still, warm waters: ponds, lakes, swamps, creeks, streams, and slow-flowing rivers. Need calm waters with basking sites like logs and rocks.
- Diet: Omnivores. Diet includes fish, crayfish, worms, snails, tadpoles, crickets, aquatic insects, and aquatic plants.
- Behaviour: Diurnal (active during the day). Spend most time in water but frequently bask in the sun to regulate body temperature.
