Semicryogenic Engine Hot Test Success
ISRO’s second short hot test of semicryogenic engine a success
Context: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) completed a short-duration hot test of its semicryogenic engine at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) in Mahendragiri on April 24, 2025.
More on News
- This marks the second milestone in the ongoing testing program for the innovative engine, following a successful first hot test on March 28, 2025.
- The successful execution of these tests is a significant step forward in ISRO’s development of next-generation propulsion systems.
Details of Current Test
- The Engine Power Head Test Article, excluding the thrust chamber, was subjected to a 3.5-second hot test.
- The engine was ignited and operated up to 60% of its rated power level, demonstrating stable and controlled performance.
- The test validated the engine start-up sequence.
- The test demonstrated stable and controlled performance.
Purpose of the Test
- The tests aimed to evaluate the design integrity and performance of critical subsystems, including turbo pumps, pre-burner, and associated control systems.
- The data obtained will help finalise the operational sequencing for the full semicryogenic engine.
Future Qualification Tests and Induction into Launch Vehicles
- Additional qualification tests are planned to comprehensively validate the engine system.
- The successful testing will eventually lead to the induction of the semicryogenic engine into ISRO’s launch vehicles.
NISAR Satellite Launch Campaign
- The launch campaign for the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite onboard the GSLV-F16 has commenced in Sriharikota.
- The Second Stage (GS2) of the GSLV launch vehicle was flagged off on March 24, 2025, from IPRC, Mahendragiri, to the launch complex in Sriharikota.
- The flag-off ceremony included participation from the Directors of IPRC and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
- The liquid stage (GS2) is reserved for the GSLV-F16 mission that will launch the NISAR satellite.
