“Meri Panchayat” App Wins Big on Global Stage

Context: India’s flagship rural digital governance initiative, the Meri Panchayat mobile application, has been conferred the WSIS Prizes 2025 Champion Award under the category Cultural Diversity and Identity, Linguistic Diversity and Local Content.

The award was presented during the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025 held in Geneva, Switzerland — a prestigious global forum co-organised by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP, and UNCTAD.

Significance of the Award

  • Global Validation: The award recognises Meri Panchayat as a model of digital inclusion and grassroots empowerment, positioning India at the forefront of e-governance innovation.
  • WSIS Platform: Held from 7–11 July 2025, WSIS+20 marked the 20th anniversary of the original World Summit on the Information Society, serving as a global platform to assess progress in digital development and inclusive ICT policies.
  • Award Ceremony: The Champion Certificate was formally received in Geneva by Ms. Sunita Jain, Senior Director, NIC/NIC–MoPR, on 10 July. 

About the Meri Panchayat App

  • Developed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), Meri Panchayat is a mobile governance (m-Governance) platform designed to empower over 2.65 lakh Gram Panchayats, 25 lakh elected representatives, and 950 million rural citizens across India.

Key Features:

  • Transparency & Financial Oversight: Real-time data on Panchayat budgets, receipts, payments, and fund utilisation. Geo-tagged and geo-fenced project monitoring.
  • Civic Engagement & Participatory Governance: Access to Gram Sabha agendas and decisions. Citizens can propose new projects and rate completed works.
  • Information Access & Accountability: Details of elected Panchayat functionaries. Track Gram Panchayat Development Plans (GPDPs) and ongoing schemes. Civic infrastructure and public service directories.
  • Grievance Redressal & Social Audits: In-built tools for lodging complaints and conducting audits. Supports social accountability mechanisms.
  • Inclusivity & Language Diversity: Multilingual interface supporting 12+ Indian languages for equitable access. Weather forecasting tailored to the Gram Panchayat level.
