Context: The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region lost 12% of its overall glacial area and 9% of its ice reserves between 1990–2020, with accelerated losses after 2010, especially in the eastern and central HKH.

  • Losses in the Ganga (21%) and Brahmaputra (16%) basins highlight the critical risk for South Asia, while rivers in East Asia (Yangtze, Yellow, Salween) show even higher losses (22–33%).
  • The Karakoram range showed resilience, losing only ~2%, highlighting uneven impacts across ranges.

What are the impacts of ice loss?

The Hindukush Himalaya (HKH), often called the Third Pole, is a critical reservoir of snow and ice outside the polar regions (~6,000 km³). Its glaciers feed 10 major river basins (Ganga, Brahmaputra, Indus, Mekong, Yangtze, Yellow, etc.) across Asia, sustaining ecosystems, agriculture, and millions of livelihoods. Its rapid ice loss carries profound consequences.

  • Water Security: Ice loss reduces long-term freshwater availability, threatening drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower. Increased seasonal variability: higher flows in short term (due to melting), reduced flows in long term (due to depletion).
  • Hazards & Disasters: Greater risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), avalanches, landslides, and debris flows. Unstable slopes and retreating glaciers increase exposure of downstream communities and infrastructure.
  • Agriculture & Livelihoods: Reduced water availability impacts crop yields in Indo-Gangetic plains and beyond. Threatens food security and rural livelihoods dependent on glacier-fed rivers.
  • Energy Security: Hydropower projects dependent on glacier-fed rivers face uncertain flows, affecting electricity generation. Increased sedimentation damages turbines and infrastructure.
  • Regional & Global Climate Feedbacks: Loss of reflective ice surfaces reduces albedo effect, accelerating warming. Contributes to sea-level rise globally. Alters monsoon dynamics and regional weather patterns.
  • Socio-Economic Risks: Downstream populations (nearly 1.9 billion people) dependent on HKH rivers face water stress. Rising risks for urban centers, agriculture belts, and industrial hubs in South and East Asia. Amplifies migration pressures, conflicts over water, and economic instability.
